 Editing task

I decided to do this clip from Bohemian Rhapsody because I think it has been edited really well and interestingly. In the beginning of the clip, it starts off with the band members talking about what is going to happen next and there are cuts between the characters. When Freddie walks through the door, there is a sense of match on action because the walking action he is doing carries on between the clips making the two flow. This is a small editing technique that the audience can barely notice because we are so used to seeing it happen normally. There are over the shoulder shots when they are talking about their song. There is then a shot-reverse-shot when Freddie is arguing with his two other band members. As Freddie and Roger are arguing and he says 'lets see how good of a boxer you really are', the camera then pans to the guitarist who is playing a beat. When the song begins to play, the editor uses quick cuts to match the rhythm and the tempo of the music. The camera shots are snappy and dynamic allowing them to sync with the pulsating beat of the song. This technique could be used to create a sense of excitement and keep the audience engaged.

After the band begins so actually play their song, a technique that is more noticeable is cross-cutting. This is when two different shots are alternated to show parallel actions happening simultaneously. In this clip, it is used when the band members are playing their instruments together and contributing their ideas in their studio and the interesting night club Freddie finds himself in. The cross-cutting builds tension and could potentially showcase the songwriting process. Another edit that is seen in this clip is a jump cut. This is when there is a sudden transition between two shots that are somehow similar to eachother. In this case, the editor utilizes jump cuts to highlight the specific moments and create a sense of urgency somehow. It adds a dynamic feel to the scene by quickly jumping from a studio to an interesting night club once again. It shoes the bands passion and dedication to their work.

The editor includes a lot of cinematography shots in this clip too. One key one is close ups. These are used to capture the emotions and expressions of the band members when they are playing. These close ups could potentially help the audience connect with the characters and understand their creative process. Other shots have been used as well such as medium shots, long shots and tracking shots. The editor used cuts to compress the time showing the band experimenting with different  musical arrangements . The progression of time conveyed through the seamless editing.  Another thing that was edited well is the sound. The editor has blended the diegetic sounds of the instruments being played with the non diegetic music. This makes the experience feel harmonious for the audience and could make then feel like that they are actually in the same room as the band. The sound is parallel because the scenes in the club match the vibe of the music. There is also multiple uses of a sound bridge.

When they actually start playing the song and the other storyline/clips are introduced, the editor uses a really interesting way to kind of merge these clips together into one. This is somehow done by making the two-three clips kind of fade into eachother. They look like they are overlaying eachother and they dissolve into one another. This is a very smart thing done by the editor because he is telling two stories at once in one frame, if that makes sense. The clips keep fading into eachother of them being at the club but also being in the studio at the same time. It also blends each instrument together, We see the singer, drummer and guitarist all together in one frame but as the clips and blended together and they soon fade out. And at the end of the clip, at around 3:28, Freddie's face becomes a silhouette as he is in the club and fades into him again but this time, in the studio with a mic in his hand.

In conclusion, I think that for this clip, a lot of editing was used to make the clip more entertaining and dynamic for the audience. The editor used different types of editing such as a montage, when the two scenes were blended together, juxtaposition could have also been used by showing the instrument and then showing the person who is playing said instrument, dissolves and jump cuts as said above.
