Film noir

  • Film noir uses a lot of shadow-filled, low-key lighting
  • Low-key lighting creates 'suspicious shadows'
  • Chiaroscuro lighting
  • The settings are usually rural areas, small towns, open roads
  • Film noir employs harsh lighting and effective shadows

Film noir typically has very low-key lighting like this one above. The strong shadows being made makes it ominous since the lighting creates silhouettes like when the lady is sitting in the chair with her gun; you can't see her face, only her outline and weapon. It also creates a sense of mystery and keeps the audience entertains by what's happening in the clip. The setting they chose also relates to the dull lighting since it seems to be a cottage where the lighting would be quite dim.
